Light, Land, and the Stories Between

Nancy Takaichi is a plein air oil painter capturing the fleeting beauty of California’s landscapes. From sunlit lakes to misty meadows, her work celebrates light, place, and the quiet moments that define them.

About

As a plein air painter, Nancy works on location. She is drawn to patterns of light and shadow in the landscape and how they relate to each other in a composition. “It always starts with composition, and how I can shape it to move the eye through a painting,” she explains,  “Once the pattern works, I move on to the color palette: how to mix harmonious color to create the unique lighting of that moment and that place.  Light changes by the minute outdoors, and each season differs greatly; the long shadows of winter differ from the bright spectral highlights of an overhead sun. Each are unique. The misty coastal air is quite different from the high desert. I think that’s why I paint so many varied subjects; I love observing and trying to recreate the differences.”

Along with strong composition and sense of light, Nancy’s paintings achieve the depth of space and a clarity of relationships between the elements in her work. Her paintings have been recognized with awards in the many plein air events and juried shows in Northern California.

Nancy has a BA in art from DePauw University. She shows her work at Colibri Gallery in Morgan Hill, CA and Truckee’s  Piper J and Ridgeline Galleries.
